We derive the temperature dependent effective potential for the φ4-theory in a transparent way that avoids infrared complications. In a first step the non-static modes are integrated out leading to an effective three-dimensional theory. The four- and three- dimensional renormalisations are consistently treated by using an appropriate Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. The complicated φ-dependence of the non-analytic part in the potential does not change the continuous nature of the phase transition.
