On the surface composition of the AlMn quasi-crystal

The surface composition of the AlMn quasi-crystal was studied by AES at various temperatures. Excess Mn was found on the surface. The Mn/Al peak ratio decreased with increasing temperature. Based on the AES results and layer growth experiences, a qualitative model is proposed to describe the growth mechanism of the QC layer using the HTSD technique.
