On the counterion dissociation of colloid electrolytes

Abstract

The experimental apparent degree of counterion dissociation (α) of colloid particles is interpreted in terms of specific and non-specific electrostatic interactions between the particles and small ions. It is shown that the α parameter does not have the meaning of a degree of dissociation. α = 2σ_/σ0, where σ_ is the negative adsorption of the coions and σ0 is the surface charge density of particles.
