For the axially symmetric SU(N) monopoles we show the existence of a superpotential determining their most relevant properties. We derive a systematic framework to generate these monopoles by applying a generalized inverse scattering method to their superpotential. To illustrate the method we construct in detail some SU(2) and SU(3) multimonopoles. In the SU(3) case we find a new six-parameter family of monopoles with U(1) × U(1) as an unbroken symmetry group and n1 = n2 = 2 as topological charges.
