Abstract

The atmospheric sulfur budget over Europe is estimated by using a box model. It is found that the sulfur gained by advection is small compared with the emission. 70-85% of the sulfur emitted and imported is removed over the territory of the continent, equally by dry (mostly in form of SO2) and wet deposition. The average atmospheric residence time of oxidized sulfur compounds over Europe is estimated to be around one day.
