Abstract

Optical absorption, ionic conductivity, thermoluminescence and roentgenoluminescence measurements on OH-free grown NaCl crystals both pure and doped with divalent cations were carried out in order to investigate the mechanisms of colour centre production by X-irradiation at room temperature (RT). The coloration mechanism can be explained in terms of different possibilities of stabilization of interstitial Cl atoms produced by primary Frenkel pair production in the anion sublattice. Interstitial stabilization is found to be possible in vacancy pairs, in cation vacancies, and in the process of V3 centre production and interstitial aggregation near dislocations. On this basis a simple kinetic model is constructed that accounts for the observed concentration variations of the F-centres and other point defects and gives a correct value for the cation vacancy-divalent cation association energy.
