Liver biopsies from 10 patients with acute viral hepatitis were investigated by electron microscopy. In the hepatocytes nucleolar alterations were observed, i.e. breakage and dispersion of the nucleolonema in the karyoplasma. Not infrequently nuclear boides were seen. Present knowledge does not allow one to decide whether nuclear bodies are normal constituents of the hepatocytes or the products of a functional impairment. Complex nuclear bodies, in acute viral hepatitis, might indicate the presence of viral infection. But on the other hand they might be a sign of a disturbed nuclear RNA synthesis.
