Observation of (n, He3) reaction

Abstract

The existence of a nuclear reaction of the type (n, He3) was verified by bombarding Cs133 with 14 MeV neutrons. Chemical separation techniques enabled the measurement of the weak I131 activity belonging to this reaction. The comparison of its yield to the yield of I130 produced in the (n, He4) reaction permitted the determination of the ratio of the cross-sections. The ratio of the cross sections of the (n, He3) and (n, He4) nuclear reactions was found to be 5±3 · 10-3. Accepting 1.0 mb for the (n, He4) reaction the cross section of the (n, He3) is 5±3 μb.
