North Hungarian Triassic facies types

Abstract

In N Hungary, Middle Triassic rifting led to the formation of three zones: a N outer shelf region, a deep central rift basin and a S outer shelf region. Rifting began in the Middle Anisian. The facies distribution in the three zones is discussed and it is suggested that only large-scale horizontal movements can explain the present-day isolated position of the central, deep-water, open-sea sequence.-R.E.S.
