New methods for the determination of p-aminosalicylic acid

Abstract

In an acidic aqueous solution, p-aminosalicylic acid decarboxylates on boiling. The amount of carbon dioxide formed can be measured by using the simple distillation method earlier suggested by the authors. Decarboxylation also yields m-aminophenol and on brominating this product, tribromoresorcinol and ammonia are obtained. The quantity of ammonia formed can be measured by distillation, while the bromination reaction makes it possible to carry out a bromatometric measurement.
