The paper introduces a method of plastic limit analysis which is shown to be more rational than the usual upper bound (yield line) approach. A comprehensive set of solutions is given for axisymmetric plastics, and the proposed approach is also extended to shell analysis. It is shown that some solutions in the literature derived on the basis of yield line methods are incorrect.
