Abstract

Carbon fibres made by pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile textile fibres are investigated using neutron small angle scattering. The average size of the skin‐layer is determined. Small voids of discrete values of radius of gyration are observed. A simple model is proposed to explain this observation. Diffraction measurements give evidence on the formation of well oriented lattice planes in relation to the direction of the fibre axis, nevertheless, an appreciable fluctuation of the lattice distance is observed.
