Negative pions in chemistry

Abstract

Measuring the probability of pion capture by hydrogen provides information on the properties of the chemical bond of hydrogen in molecules, in particular, on the electron density near the protons. This is shown in studies of the temperature dependence of pion capture in hydrogen-bonded liquids, of the influence of electronegative groups on the hydrogen atom in simple organic molecules, and of the effect of coordination on water molecules in aquacomplexes and aqueous solutions.
