Abstract

The phenomenological models for near surface effects of diffusion are summarized in which the experimentally determined D//v values depend similarly on the penetration depths, although a different time dependence was established. The time dependence of the shape of penetration plots for the diffusion of **1**1**0Ag into aluminum was measured at a fixed temperature. The subsequent regions of near surface effect, volume diffusion, and short-circuiting effect have been separated. The experimental results are qualitatively interpreted through a simple geometrical model.
