An icosahedral (i) Al-Mn-Ce nanophase is formed in rapidly quenched alloys. Ce induces a gradual change of the six-dimensional (6D) lattice from a simple icosahedral (SI) to a face-centered icosahedral (FCI) symmetry with relaxation of lattice distortions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data support Ce location on FCI sites, although off-center positions are suggested.
