Multielectron transitions in X-ray absorption and inner-shell ionization phenomena

Multielectron transition processes accompanying deep inner-shell vacancy production are described. Shakeup and shakeoff processes in which atomic electrons are excited or ionized due to a sudden change of the central potential are considered. Experimental and theoretical studies of shake processes in various inner-shell ionization phenomena, such as radioactive decay, Auger effect, charged-particle impact, photoionization and X-ray absorption, are reviewed.
