Mossbauer effect study of siderite and limonite ores.

Abstract

Yuvoslav siderite and limonite were studied by 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. The spectra of the siderite ore show that all iron is in the ferrous state. The influence of texture on the quadrupole line asymmetry of siderite is discussed. Gamma irradiation of siderite with a dose of 1.12 MGy could not induce the oxidation of Fe(II). Three sets of six-line components M1, M2, M3 in the spectrum of limonite were observed at room T. The main six-line component M1 corresponds with alpha -FeOOH. The second six-line component M2 can be ascribed to alpha -FeOOH with the Al3+ impurities substituted. The limonite ore also contains a small quantity of hematite as shown with the six-line component M3. 57Fe Mossbauer parameters of M1 and M2 components at 78 K are very close, and therefore were inseparable. -T.R.
