Abstract

Rhodococcus equi is a Gram-positive, obligate aerobic bacterium which can be found in the soil, horse manure, sometimes in pigs and occasionally in other animal species. It is a facultative pathogenic bacterium which can cause suppurative bronchopneumonia with abscesses, enteritis and arthritis in 1-6 month old foals. Humans, first of all immunocompromised persons can also be affected. The author summarizes cultural, morphological, biochemical, serological features of R. equi and gives a review on virulence of the bacterium on the basis of literature data and his own results.
