The two-potential approach (TPA) to the one-body tunneling problems was investigated. The approach was compared with the results of numerical calculations based on the Gamow-state formalism. It was found that the TPA becomes extremely accurate if the separation radius, dividing the entire space into the inner and the outer regions, is taken deeply inside the barrier, but not too close to the outer classical turning point. It was suggested that the resulting modified TPA reproduces the resonance's energy and the width, both for narrow and wide resonances.
