Modified polyethersulfone membranes

Abstract

Asymmetric polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes were prepared and modified by electron irradiation in various environments with different doses, and also by subsequent grafting with hydrophilic vinyl monomers. Significant changes were observed in the performance of the modified membranes. At certain combinations of experimental parameters, both water flux and solute retention were improved compared with the untreated membrane. The alterations in the surface characteristics of the modified membranes were monitored by attenuated total reflection and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies.
