Modelling the magnetic nanoparticle filling procedure of flow-through microchambers

Abstract

In this paper a model of the magnetic nanoparticle filling procedure of a microfluidic microchamber is presented. In the chamber continuous fluid flow is applied with incoming nanoparticles. These particles are then anchored in the chamber by an external magnetic field. The arrangement is created to investigate enzyme-substrate reactions, where the enzyme is immobilized to the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles, while the substrate comes with the flow in form of a solution. The goal of the current work is to predict the final distribution of the nanoparticles in the chamber as this is crucial from the point of view of the enzymatic reaction. The magnetic field, the nanoparticles and the flow are modelled with the help of the open source software OpenFOAM. The nanoparticle dynamics is handled with the multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) method. The paper discusses the model settings in details and presents preliminary results of the results of the simulation.
