Modelling of the thermo-elastic response of composite media by a transfer matrix approach

Abstract

A transfer matrix method is introduced here and it is demonstrated to be generally applicable for the calculation of the thermo-elastic response of one dimensional structures exposed to transient laser heating. The method enables the modelling of photothermal measurements of many practically important samples such as multi-layers and materials with continuously varying thermal and/or elastic properties. Examples for its possible applications are given.
