Abstract

Method is proposed for modeling and continuous monitoring of heat and flame induced chemical changes in polymers. The method, applying tiny laser-beam, microscope (or microscope objective at the end of fiber optic) and Raman (or ATR-IR) detection is designed for micro scale modeling of the combustion and, in general, for detection of the micro-chemical changes in the solid phase during thermal processes. The intensity of the laser treatment can be optimized for modeling various fire scenarios. The analysis has been carried out on various pure and CNT containing polymer (EVA, PP, epoxy) samples. The current temperature of the samples under laser or Cone treatment can be determined parallel to the chemical analysis. Conclusions are to be used for refining the knowledge about the mechanism of degradation of the studied systems.
