Abstract

A phenomenological model for the dynamics of a moving charge-density wave (CDW) is presented in order to describe the non-linear response of the CDW to a dc field. It is a modification of the classical model. Deformations of the CDW around impurity centers are taken into account but long-range order is preserved so that the model describes a single domain. Fluctuations in the impurity distribution are neglected. In the strong-pinning case the dc conductivity turns out to be non-singular at the threshold and fits the experimental data reasonably well. In the weak-pinning limit there is no threshold field. A comparison with other models is attempted.
