Microwave-extraction -a new method superseding traditional Soxhlet extraction

Abstract

A rapid and effective method has been developed for extracting various antinutritive compounds occurring in different plants. A simple microwave technique was used to extract pyrimidine-glucosides and gossypol from raw and processed faba bean and cottonseed meal, respectively. A comparison was made between the proposed method and the traditional Soxhlet technique. It has been shown, that the new method is more effective regarding the yield of the extraction and the protection of the compounds to be analyzed. The method is suitable for the rapid extraction of large sample series.
