Abstract

Microcoenological studies were made on the effects of old world bluestem (OWB) on biodiversity on a pasture in Hungary. The number of species combination on the grassland dominated by OWB was significantly lower than on the controll area. Consequently the spread of OWB limits the free combination of species. As a result the inner structure of the grassland become degraded. The increased dominance of OWB and the disappearance of annual species generated lower compositional diversity in autumn. In the case of transects dominated by OWB negative correlation was found between the frequency of OWB, frequency of litter and compositional diversity. The location of traisects in a coenostate-space indicated that the structure of the grassland was detemined by competitive exclusion in the case of OWB dominated transects. In the case of controlltransects the stucture was determined by competition and disturbance The transects are fixed so it will be possible to follow the effects of further spread of OWB.
