Method for the study of 100 ns to 10 μs activities excited by 14.7 MeV neutrons

Abstract

A method is described for the investigation of isomeric levels of 0.1-10 μs half-life excited by 14.7 MeV fast neutrons from the 3H(d,n)4He reaction. The alpha particles arising from the neutron-producing reaction determine the zero of time. By combining the recoiled alpha particle method with suitable pulsing of the deuteron beam, a sufficiently high effect-to-background ratio was achieved to make the measurement feasible.
