Abstract

In Hungary the As pollution in drinking water sources is very high at East and South. Athough the Fe and Mn removal technologies decrease the As content too, in some regions the As concentration in drinking water is higher than the recommended value of WHO. The aim of this study was to investigate different nanofiltration membranes for the removal of bivalent (Mg, Zn), As(III) and As(V) ions. In laboratory scale equipment model solutions were filtered with TFC-4921S (Fluid Systems, USA), Desal D-5 (Desalination Systems, USA), UTC-60 (Toray-Ropur) and K 21 (KEKI, Hungary) membranes and the ion rejection and permeate flux was measured using different operation conditions. The Mg and Zn rejection was very good on nanofiltration membranes, while the As(III) rejection was lower than expected. Oxidizing the As(III) to As(V) excellent rejection was achieved not only with model solutions, but using As containing drinking water from South-Hungary.
