The binding of ribosomes to the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum has been reported to change sensitively under conditions leading to cellular injury. In the course of in vitro experiments it was noticed that cooling of the cells per se, without addition of any injurious agent to the incubation medium, induces morphologically detectable alteration of the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (RER).
