Abstract

The characteristics and classification of atmospheric aerosols are described, followed by an outline of the origin and composition of marine aerosols. Here, the authors discuss salt nuclei in marine air as a function of altitude and wind force; size distribution of nuclei; and their distribution over different oceans. Tables present (NH4)2SO4, NACl, H2SO4 and mixtures sampled in different parts of the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean; sources of marine aerosols (man made or natural) and granulometric distribution data.
