Magnetization and NMR study of the magnetic inhomogeneities and electronic structure fluctuations in the metallic glasses Ni80P14B6 and Ni78B14Si8

Abstract

Combined magnetization and NMR (11B and 31P) linewidth and Knight shift studies were performed on the paramagnetic Ni80P14B6 and Ni78B14Si8 metallic glasses as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. This allowed us to remove the line-broadening term due to giant-moment paramagnetic clusters from the observed field-dependent broadening and the remaining broadening characteristic for the inhomogeneous Knight shift could be obtained. This analysis revealed a proportionality between the average Knight shift and the width of the Knight shift distribution for metalloid nuclei and this is interpreted as a correlation between the average local electronic properties at the Fermi energy and their fluctuations on the metalloid sites in Ni-metalloid type amorphous alloys. Some conclusions will also be drawn regarding the magnetic inhomogeneities and short-range order in this kind of metallic glasses.
