Magnetic tweezers for intracellular applications

Abstract

A magnetic tweezer was designed and constructed for intracellular investigations. The micromanipulator used two coils to magnetize to saturation micron-size superparamagnetic particles and generated high magnitude constant field gradients over cellular dimensions. It was found that because of their compact size, the tweezers could be mounted on the stage of an inverted microscope and used for intracellular manipulations.
