Abstract

The Mössbauer spectra of iron and cobalt fluoroborate hexahydrate show a change by a factor of two in the quadrupole interaction near 280 K and 185 K, respectively, together with a sudden drop in resonance fraction. This behaviour is explained as a first order phase transition in which the axial parameter of the crystalline electric field changes in sign and magnitude.
