Lymphedema treatment's effect of gait parameters

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of specialized lymphedema treatment on the overall picture of gait. Before and after the therapy we executed a pilot study to observe the gait parameters. The examined patients were in different phases of conditions (Stages II, III and IV). The measurement was performed on an instrumented treadmill with self-selected velocity. During the experimentation the simplified kinematical parameters were calculated using the Zebris processing program. Applying the data of the treadmill equipped with pressure-measuring sensors, the force awaking in the forefoot, the midfoot and the heel on both legs, furthermore, the butterfly parameters and a few kinetical parameters (e.g. step length, step width, duration of stance and double stance phase) could be calculated. Based on the results of this present study the seriousness of the lymphedema significantly influences the kinematical and kinetical gait parameters, and the effectiveness of lymphedema management is exceedingly traceable with a pilot study.
