Abstract

42 human renal cell carcinoma (RCC) samples were investigated using histological and immunohistochemical methods. The authors summarize their experiences related to anti tumor immunity. The immunophenotype and localisation of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) were analysed in detail. TIL were observed in 37 out of 42 cases. The expression and localisation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC Class I and II) was defined. MHC was present on 17 out of 22 tumors. MHC-II was in co-expression with tumor infiltrating lymphocytes in 12 out of this 17 cases. The immunophenotype of TIL was heterogenosus, e.g. T-helper (CD4) and T-cytotoxic (CD8) subclasses were present, while natural killer (NK) cells were additionally detectable in 6 cases. Based on their experiences the authors stated that renal cell carcinoma itself is capable of presenting tumor antigen(s) for induction of cell mediated immune responses. Lymphocytes which infiltrate the renal cell carcinoma must be in an inactive condition.
