Abstract

High molecular weight proteins of human cataractous lenses were isolated and examined for the phospholipoid composition. According to the results 70% of the phospholipoids of this fraction are represented by sphyngomyeline. It is suggested on the basis of the composition of phospholipoids that the lipid content of the protein fraction originates in the plasma membrane of the zonules.
