Abstract

This personal narrative is an introduction to a collective effort by a number of scientists and artists to examine the role and significance of symmetry in the most diverse domains of nature and human activity. Material symmetry, devoid of the rigor of geometrical symmetry, is viewed applicable to material objects as well as abstractions with limitless implications.
