Lattice gas model on tetrahedral sites of а вcс lattice

Abstract

A lattice gas model is suggested for describing the order-disorder transition of mobile particles in вcc cage lattices such as a-Agl, Ag2S, NbHx, etc. The effect of repulsive first- and second-neighbour interactions is studied by a six sub-lattice mean-field approximation. With a fixed number of mobile particles determined by the composition of Agl the mean-field approximation predicts that the disordering process strongly depends on the ratio of the second- and first-neighbour interactions. Beside the low-temperature ordered state and the high-temperature random distribution two further intermediate states are found to be stable. This fact results in three different kinds of disordering process. The results suggest a new interpretation of the a phase of AgI.
