Lamellar morphology of melt-crystallized B-polypropylene studied by atomic force microscopy

Abstract

Atomic force microscopy was used to study the lamellar organization and development in isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The structure and crystallization kinetics were investigated with its hedritic morphology in β (hexagonal) form. The lamellar architecture observed explains the optical birefringence; hedritic objects develop into a spherical envelop by the lamellae splaying consecutively around three axis; curved lamellar habit is frequently observed; the growth proceeds mainly by the branching, diverging and twisting of the lamellae around screw-dislocations.
