In nuclear power plants, one the most effective means of early failure detection is based on the analysis of reactor noises. Diagnostic expert system aimed at early failure detection should include the knowledge coming from experience expressed in rules, and the functional knowledge expressed in structural as well as qualitative and quantitative models of different principle. Appropriate formalization of these types of knowledge is essential for the effectiveness of the diagnostic inference process, i.e. for the success of the diagnostics. In the diagnostic system under development the primary means of knowledge representation is an object oriented programming environment based on a Lisp dialect. The system describing the structure and the behaviour of a nuclear block and the inference mechanism utilizing it, are built on that and the evaluating mechanism of the Lisp.
