Kinks and strings

Abstract

We will show that by applying two different kinds of constant loading to a planar, inextensible string, no smooth string shape can be in equilibrium. However, there exist an infinity of weak (`kinky') solutions. By numerical perturbation we identify the physically admissible ones.
