Nonisothermal thermogravimetric experiments using Avicel cellulose, 4-methyl-D-glucurono-D-xylan, and sugar cane bagasse in the presence and absence of catalysts (inorganic salts) were subject to kinetic evaluation by the method of least squares. Five different mathematical models were employed. These were based on the assumption of (1) a single first-order reaction, (2) a chain of successive reactions, (3) competitive reactions, (4) independent parallel reactions, and (5) a combination of two successive reactions and a separate independent reaction. The choice between which of these models offered the best fit was based partly on chemical considerations and partly on the quality of the fit. The resulting activation energies and preexponential factors had chemically meaningful magnitudes and helped to confirm or reject various hypotheses on the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reaction mechanisms of lignocellulose decomposition.
