KINETICS OF GP ZONE FORMATION IN Al-Zn-Mg ALLOYS.

Abstract

The kinetics of GP zone formation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys was studied in the temperature range of 20 to 60 degree C by electrical resistivity and X-ray small angle scattering measurements. The early stage of the process could be described by a Cottrell-Bilby type kinetics. It is concluded that in this stage both Zn and Mg atoms migrate to the zones but the rate of the process is controlled mainly by the motion of Mg atoms. After a certain period of aging whcih is strongly dependent on the aging temperature and on the composition of the alloy the process slows down, probably because of the decreasing supersaturation and the appearance of coherency strains around the zones. This stage of the process can be described by Avrami kinetics.
