K-shell ionization by heavy ions

Abstract

Theoretical and experimental values for K-shell ionization cross sections by heavy-ion bombardments on various elements have been compared with each other graphically. The theoretical values are calculated by the relativistic plane-wave Born approximation, including the binding-energy and Coulomb-deflection effects. The experimental data are expressed as the ratio to the calculated values and plotted as a function of projectile energy or a reduced velocity parameter. It is found that agreement between theory and experiment is not so good as in the case of proton and α-particle bombardments. Possible for the discrepancy are discussed qualitatively.
