In 2015 scholars of sociology of sport celebrated the 50th anniversary of the institutionalization of the discipline. The event also provides an occasion to overview the situation, development and future perspectives of Hungarian sociology of sport, after several decades. The present study investigates the past half a century of the discipline in the context of the various social functions, structures and expectations of sociology, sport, and sport sciences. In the analysis, the authors reflect on (1) the contradictions of the political-social environment in the initial period of institutionalization, (2) the evolution of civil organizations after the 1989-1990 transition as the 2nd wave of institutionalization, (3) the positive and negative aspects of the current situation with regards to education, research and talent recruitment, and (4) the potential and necessary directions and limitations of future development.
