Abstract

Isotopic exchange in a gas chromatographic column is a well known method for preparing labelled compounds. The main feature of the method here described is the simultaneous isotopic exchange and separation of a mixture. The degree of istopic exchange can be varied by several factors: by changing the temperature and contact time and by use of a catalyst. This provides the possibility of labelling, identifying and determining different types of organic ompounds (alcohols, ketones, mercaptans, olefins, etc.) in complex mixtures. Some examples are given to demonstrate the application of the method. Owing to the high sensitivity of the detector the method can-by improving the conditions- also be applied to trace analysis.
