Investigations on the effective length of asymmetrized quadrupole lenses

Abstract

It is shown, that different effective lengths belong to the focusing and deflecting fields superimposed in asymmetrized quadrupole lenses. The difference is calculated and/or measured for various electrode configurations. The concave cylindrical electrode lens emerges from among the investigated ones with its exhibiting the smallest difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical effective lengths. The difference can be taken into account with a simple modification of the transfer matrix given for the rectangular model.
