In this study two different soils, a loamy brown forest soil and a chemozjom were investigated. The sorption behaviour of Cu-ions was investigated by gradual removal of different phases. Adsorption of Cu-ions was studied as a function of pH and metal ion concentration of initial solutions. The steps of phases removal consisted of the saturation of ion-exchange sites with 1 M Ca(NO3)2-solution, removal of organic matter with H 2O2 and removal of free iron oxides with a dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) buffer system. It was found that whereas ion-exchange processes are negligible in the adsorption of Cu-ions, the organic compounds play an important role in the adsorption and high-energy bonds are formed. The removal of free iron oxides resulted in the increase of sorption capacity, indicating that new adsorption surfaces became available.
