Abstract

The Earth-ionosphere wave guide is excited by lightning strokes. Parameters of the worldwide thunderstorm activity were deduced from the Schumann resonance (SR) observations at the Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory near Nagycenk. It became obvious that SR can also be used for indicating global surface thermodynamical processes. Systematic variations of SR frequencies observed on the ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) time scale can be considered as the manifestation of a meridional redistribution in the global position of the worldwide lightning activity. Thunderstorms are shifted southward/northward during warm El Niño/cold La Niña periods. Numerous periods have been found in the dynamic spectra of SR-parameters. Periods of 27 and 13.5 days are of extraterrestrial origin, the others are due to tropospheric processes.
