Investigation of Mg loss during heat treatments in an AlMgSi alloy

Abstract

The Mg loss from Al Mg Si alloys during high temperature heat treatments was studied by dilatometric, electrical resistivity and lattice parameter measurements. The process of Mg loss could be detected above 200°C. The analysis of the time and temperature dependence of this process indicated that it is controlled primarily by a surface reaction. The total amount of Mg lost during a very long heat treatment was found to depend linearly on the temperature.
